Use this 25-point SEO-ready website checklist to review structure, metadata, indexing, Core Web Vitals, accessibility, schema and analytics before launch.
An SEO-ready website gives search engines a clear, fast and technically accessible version of useful pages. It does not guarantee rankings, but it removes avoidable barriers before content promotion begins. This 25-point checklist is designed for UK SMEs reviewing a new build, redesign or agency handover.

Map one primary purpose to each page: a service, location, question, comparison or case study. Avoid creating many thin pages that say the same thing with a town or keyword swapped.
Group related services beneath clear hubs and keep important pages within a few meaningful clicks of the home page. Breadcrumbs can help visitors and search engines understand that hierarchy.
Use readable words such as /managed-servers/ rather than IDs or long strings. Choose the final URL before launch where possible. If a URL changes, redirect the old address directly to the closest equivalent page.
Link articles to the relevant service, service pages to supporting guides, and related guides to one another. Use anchor text that explains the destination instead of repeating “click here”.
Every indexable page should be reachable through the site’s internal links. A URL appearing only in a sitemap receives less context and is harder for people to discover.

Give every indexable page a concise title that identifies its main topic and brand. Avoid boilerplate that leaves several pages with near-identical titles.
Summarise the page accurately and give the searcher a reason to visit. Search engines may choose another snippet, but a strong description is still useful when it is selected.
The visible H1 should confirm what the page is about. Organise sections with descriptive H2 and H3 headings in a logical order; do not choose headings merely for their font size.
Put the direct answer, value proposition or service outcome near the beginning. Visitors should not have to cross a long promotional introduction to learn whether the page matches their need.
Include specific processes, constraints, examples, evidence, authorship and review dates where they help. Generic text assembled around keywords gives a prospective customer little reason to trust the business.
Write concise alt text for images that convey information. Use empty alt text for purely decorative images, and never stuff keywords into every description.
Live pages should return 200, permanent moves 301 or 308, missing pages 404 or 410, and genuine server failures 5xx. A “not found” message that returns 200 can confuse crawlers.
Do not block CSS, JavaScript or images needed to render public pages. Remember that robots.txt controls crawling, not reliable removal from search results.
Important public pages should not carry an accidental noindex. Low-value internal search results, staging copies and private areas should not be indexed.
Use a self-referencing canonical on normal pages and a consistent preferred host and protocol. Canonicals are hints for consolidating duplicates; they are not a substitute for clean links and redirects.
Include canonical, indexable URLs and accurate modification dates. Exclude redirects, errors and pages intentionally marked noindex. Submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Use authentication or network controls, not robots.txt alone. Before launch, verify that production does not inherit staging’s noindex settings.
Content, navigation, forms and calls to action must work on small screens without horizontal scrolling or tiny controls. Mobile content should not be a stripped-down afterthought.
Compress and correctly size the hero image, avoid delaying it behind unnecessary scripts, and preload it only when justified. Google’s recommended Core Web Vitals target for Largest Contentful Paint is within 2.5 seconds at the 75th percentile.
Reduce long JavaScript tasks, third-party scripts and heavy page builders. The recommended Interaction to Next Paint target is under 200 milliseconds at the 75th percentile.
Set image dimensions, reserve space for embeds and banners, and avoid inserting content above what the visitor is reading. The recommended Cumulative Layout Shift target is below 0.1.
Lighthouse is useful for diagnosis, while Search Console and field data show what eligible real users experienced. Test representative templates, devices and connection speeds—not only the home page on a developer’s laptop.
Google documents these thresholds in its Core Web Vitals guidance.
Use appropriate types such as Organization, BreadcrumbList, Article or Product only when the page satisfies the requirements. Validate the markup and avoid claims that visitors cannot see on the page.
Show accurate contact details, service area, privacy information and responsible authorship. Use HTTPS throughout and remove mixed content. Testimonials and case studies should be genuine and contextual.
Set up consent-aware analytics, Search Console and conversion events for meaningful actions such as qualified enquiries or completed purchases. Give the business owner administrative access to the domain, analytics, search and content-management accounts.
Google’s official SEO Starter Guide is a useful reference for crawlability, organisation, useful content, links and images. SEO readiness is the foundation; sustained visibility also needs content that matches real demand and earns trust.

No. It removes technical barriers and creates a strong platform, but rankings also depend on relevance, competition, reputation, content quality and links.
Every important page should have a clear audience and purpose. That often corresponds to a search topic, but forcing a separate page for every slight keyword variation creates duplication rather than value.
Before the structure and URLs are approved. Waiting until launch can create avoidable redirects, missing content, poor templates and measurement gaps.
